Prof. L.C. Anyaegbunam is the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences. A seasoned academic and researcher, she has made significant contributions in the field of biological research and education.

Her leadership is focused on fostering interdisciplinary research, academic excellence, and practical training in biological sciences. Under her guidance, the department continues to nurture scientists equipped to solve real-world biological and environmental challenges.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), established in 2005, is committed to providing comprehensive education and fostering research in all aspects of biological sciences. We aim to graduate students who are highly enterprising in various fields of endeavor, both locally and globally.

Through a blend of classroom and laboratory work, we encourage the training of students in educational, cultural, social, and technological aspects of biology, preparing them for impactful careers and contributions to society.

History and Milestones - A Path of Excellence

Established in 2005, the department has maintained consistent accreditation since 2008, a testament to its high standards. We have graduated numerous students who are now contributing to various sectors both locally and internationally.

Key milestones include the graduation of two first-class students (Jibuli Obiageli and Nwankwo Amarachukwu) and the successful demerging of the department into Botany and Zoology options.

Admission Requirements and Procedures - Clear Pathways

Non-Graduate/Undergraduate Admission
  • UTME with approved minimum score.
  • Credit level passes in five relevant subjects in SSCE.
  • Satisfy faculty/departmental requirements.
  • Holders of OND with credit/merit in major subjects and NUC minimum standards.
Postgraduate Admission
  • Undergraduate degree in biology and NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
  • PGD: At least 3rd class in related field or good HND grade.
  • M.Sc.: 2nd class lower division (2.50 point) or PGD at credit level (3.0 on 5.0 scale).
  • PhD: M.Sc. with CGPA of at least 3.50.
  • Direct Entry: 2 A level papers in relevant subjects and ND in relevant discipline.

Admission Deferment, Transfer, and Registration: Can be done with consent of Registrar and Head of department, and transfers within faculty with written consent. Registration based on stipulated courses and ICT guidance.
